Zusammenfassung: Through a dialogue between the legal profession and academia, the volume marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of bar associations, offering a reflection on the independence of the legal profession, which constitutes the primary safeguard of an effective right of defence and adequate protection of rights, and for which bar associations serve as the principal institutional guarantor. The contributions collected in the volume trace the evolution of bar associations through the various regulatory frameworks from Italian unification to the present, and address several recurring themes in the history of the legal profession, such as gender equality, education and access to the profession, disciplinary authority, and legal ethics, which have a significant impact on the role and functioning of the associations. What emerges is a shared reflection on the role of the legal profession within the legal system and on the challenges it must confront in order to adapt to increasingly complex contexts while preserving its core identityZusammenfassung: Attraverso un confronto tra mondo accademico e professionale, il volume celebra i centocinquant’anni dall’istituzione degli ordini forensi, proponendo una riflessione sul tema dell’indipendenza dell’avvocatura, che costituisce la principale garanzia per un efficace diritto di difesa e per una adeguata tutela dei diritti e di cui gli ordini forensi rappresentano il principale presidio. I contributi raccolti nel volume ripercorrono l’evoluzione degli ordini forensi, attraverso i vari assetti normativi che si sono succeduti dall’unificazione a oggi, ed affrontano alcuni temi ricorrenti nella storia dell’avvocatura, quali la parità di genere, la formazione e l’accesso alla professione, la potestà disciplinare e la deontologia forense, che incidono profondamente sul ruolo degli ordini.
