Zusammenfassung: There are significant geopolitical challenges associated with Svalbard and its surrounding areas. Amidst these challenges, nearly 400 children live their daily lives, and their rights are influenced by political decisions. The rights of children and youths are, in many ways, a forgotten chapter in the story of Svalbard. There is considerably more knowledge about Svalbard's environment, geopolitical position, nature, and wildlife than about the children of Svalbard and their rights. However, there is a substantial legal framework that these children and their families must navigate, particularly for those who are not Norwegian. A key issue is how arguments about practical and unique political/geopolitical conditions should be weighed against children's human rights. Svalbard is part of the Kingdom of Norway, and there is no doubt that children on Svalbard have rights. They are covered by the Norwegian Constitution and, like most children worldwide, by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Nevertheless, the legal situation for children on Svalbard differs significantly from that on mainland Norway, and there are also distinctions among different groups of children on Svalbard. The legal questions are central to this book. The approach is child rights-focused, which influences the choice of topics, perspectives, purpose of the work, and, to some extent, the methodology. However, children's rights must be balanced against other rights and societal challenges. Det er storpolitiske utfordringer knyttet til Svalbard og områdene rundt, samtidig som den norske forvaltningen av Svalbard er inne i en brytningstid. Midt oppi dette lever knapt 400 barn sine daglige liv og deres rettigheter påvirkes av de politiske valg som gjøres. Dette gir boka høy aktualitet. Barn og unges rettigheter har på mange måter vært et glemt kapittel i fortellingen om Svalbard. Det finnes imidlertid et stort rettslig landskap som disse barna og deres familier må navigere innenfor. Ikke minst gjelder dette for den økende andel barn som ikke er norske. Formålet med boka er nettopp å sette temaet på dagsorden, å gå inn i det rettslige landskapet for å løfte fram og synliggjøre hvordan barns rettsstilling på Svalbard skiller seg fra den tilsvarende i Fastlands-Norge. Det stilles også spørsmål ved om de svalbardpolitiske målene nødvendigvis må føre til de konklusjonene som staten treffer med hensyn til barns rettigheter på ulike områder.
